Wilmington Convention Center Boasts Sustainable Design

Newly opened facility is eco-friendly, pending LEED certification

Wilmington, N.C. — The Wilmington Convention Center, North Carolina’s “New Center of Attention,” features design and elements where sustainability is second-nature and individual comfort lies in every room. The newly opened 107,000-square-foot building, which is pending LEED certification, captures the essence of the historic riverfront and railroad that established Wilmington, while maintaining an eco-friendly, innovative design.

Built with “green” in mind from the ground up, the building sits on a reclaimed brownfield site along the historic downtown Riverwalk and features a Low-VoC white roof which uses less energy to cool the facility by reflecting heat from the sun.  In addition, strategically placed, high performance windows conserve energy and help with solar gain during colder months.

Prior to construction, a sophisticated sand filtration system was installed to protect the Cape Fear River, which served as the inspiration for the design and décor of the building, from runoff.  Floor to ceiling windows line the main concourse and provide natural lighting along with beautiful views of the riverfront. Each of the interior rooms has individual lighting controls, energy management and air quality sensors with HVAC controls and graphics so groups utilizing the spaces are comfortable throughout any event or meeting.

The interior features low-odor and low-chemical finishes, while the upholstery and carpets are made from recycled content. Water saving devices were designed and installed to reduce water consumption by an impressive 48 percent, including a water saving irrigation system for the landscape.  The convention center also implemented a green cleaning and maintenance program to further preserve the space and its sustainability.  In addition, the exterior spaces were considered in this eco-friendly design with dedicated priority parking spaces for fuel-efficient hybrid vehicles as well as easy-access bike racks.

“The Wilmington community along with those attending meetings and conventions in our new building are all part of a broader effort to raise awareness for and increase the use of green practices in our area,” said General Manager of the Wilmington Convention Center, Susan Eaton.  “We recognize our responsibility to the natural environment and history of this area, and we are proud of the eco-friendly features and design elements implemented throughout the Wilmington Convention Center.”

Located in historic downtown Wilmington along the two-mile Riverwalk, the Wilmington Convention Center sits within walking distance of local hotels, B&Bs and more than 200 restaurants, shops and attractions. The area has easy access to three beach communities (Carolina, Kure and Wrightsville) and is home to nearly 8,000 hotel rooms and suites with unique settings ranging from the river to the sea.
